We all know how our favorite music can lift our spirits when we are having a difficult day.  It was recently documented that certain types of music can boost the immune system when listened to on a regular basis.  Medical research has also shown that music can help speed up the natural healing of the body and actually rehabilitate.

Music has been used for centuries to honor and pay tribute to fallen heroes (Amazing Grace) as well as comforting our loved ones during the grieving process.  When hearing the lyrics of a song that describes our situation, it is almost as if the song’s message is theraputic much in the same way talking to a close friend about a troubling situation can calm and provide solace to us.

Music and artistic avenues of expression are ruled by the planet Venus.  Those that possess a strong relationship between Taurus (throat, larynx, vocal chords, etc) and its ruler Venus (music) along with Mercury (how we communicate) can often become singers and musicians or at the very least will surround themselves with music and song.  There is nothing written in the stars however that demands we pursue a music career because of a strong Venusian influence in our chart as there are numerous factors in one’s natal chart that determine how we will integrate the energies of Venus into our lives. However, many famous singers and musicians have a significant association with Venus and Taurus in their natal chart.  Randy Travis has his sun in Taurus with Taurus rising.  Barbara Streisand has the sun closely tied to Mercury in Taurus.  Kelly Clarkson has both sun and moon in Taurus with Venus strongly tied to Mercury.

Again, there are likely just as many singers and musicians that seem to have no special relationship between Venus, Taurus and Mercury.  One could argue that those born with the strong musical associations already in place astrologically came into this world already gifted musically and were somewhat destined to become singers.  Conversely, those that lacked any real astrologically indicated relationships between the musical planets in their natal chart may have found themselves with a constant struggle to find their singing voice.  The world is filled with gifted singers that have barely sang a note and average singers that have had international success purely based on their tenacity, drive and poetic abilities.

   September 26th, 2011 at 3:30 pm  eThat is the type of feeling (Moon) I am talking about. it’s when you begin to sense that things are about to change for the better (Venus, Jupiter) despite not being able to mentally or intellectually (Mercury) think it’s possible. When we are elementary school age, we are right in the thick of events, reacting without any sense of a bigger picture perspective on much of anything which is attributed to lack of experience when in astrological terms, it is due to our close association with our natal planetary placements. The further we move away or the older we become, the more the precession of the equinox comes into play as our daily charts and natal planet placements begin to shift. This also mirrors how we learn from life’s events but more importantly for this “gut feeling” that occurs, we actually begin to experience events before they happen. Conversely, when planets appear to be backing up in the night’s sky, we can actually sense things after they happen which appears to be a more natural sensation. A common example of this is hearing an athlete being interviewed who has just won the Stanley Cup saying that it hasn’t quite sunk in yet but he expects by tomorrow he will be able to feel the victory. This is something we don’t really question in life but the more interesting aspects (no pun intended) of astrology can explain why we are able to experience feelings after the event (post-emotion) or before an event (gut-feeling).

Horoscopic astrology first appeared in Egypt nearly 3,000 years ago.  Those that say the sun signs change over time are referring to the ”precession of the equinox” which is the gradual change in the Earth’s axis of rotation.  This change in rotation would seem to move the dates of the zodiac. 

Vedic astrologers take into consideration the earth’s wobble and is different from horoscopic astrology by almost one sun sign.  However, Vedic astrology does not account for the differences in size of the different constellations.  Some constellations occupy a much  greater space in the night sky than 30 degrees or one-twelfth of a 360 degree circle.  Therefore, Vedic astrology or any other astrological system based on the earth’s wobble cannot be used to determine what are traditionally known as the twelve signs of the zodiac.

For the novice astrologer, looking ahead to see what the future will bring can be an exciting time.  Your friends and relatives now look to you to see what kind of insight you can give them on questions about love, happiness and money.  As you hone your skills in the art of forecasting, you begin to realize that the ability to transcend time comes with heavy responsibilities.  You have the car keys to the future and just like observing the speed limit signs on the roads, you now see that you must be very careful about the information that you provide for others.  An astrologer telling someone that they will meet the love of their life in two months because the planets Venus (love),  Mars (desire)  and Jupiter (expansion) are partying in the person’s seventh house (marriage) touching off that person’s own natal venus and jupiter etc. is simply put, unethical.  First of all, an astrologer does not posess the ability to forecast any event with complete accuracy.  A student of the stars can gather and analyze all of the data but when it comes time to forecast, it is merely a best guess.

In his 1988 memoirs, President Reagan revealed that his wife Nancy regularly consulted an astrologer about his schedule.   Nancy Reagan had hired an astrologer, Joan Quigley, who provided  insight on which days were best and the one’s that should be avoided for certain presidential duties such as meetings, speeches and important document signings.  I mention this revelation about astrology in the white house to show that despite the scandal and press this stirred up at the time, the use of astrology to provide insight in this particular example was not unethical.  Astrology used to show trends rather than absolutes like a meteorologist forecasting the weather is the proper use of forecasting.  A weatherman saying with unfettered certainty that it will be sunny tomorrow will look like a fool returning to work the next day after the worst hail storm in history.   

An astrologer should never say with certainty that any event will occur or not occur.  Telling an individual that they will never get married because the person does not have any planets in the house of marriage in their natal chart or ruling planets of that house in any notable configuration is not only unethical, it shows the inexperience of the astrologer.

Unfortunately, anyone can call themselves an astrologer without receiving any certification or training.  The best astrologers will always let an individual know that forecasting is for entertainment purposes only.  If some predictions come true, that is more along the lines of winning the lottery particularly if the prediction was that the individual was going to win the lottery. A recent article on the world’s billionaires refers to Microsoft’s Bill Gates’ 66,000-square-foot, $147.5 million mansion in Medina, Wash. This is contrasted with Warren Buffet’s choice to still live in the five-bedroom house in Omaha that he purchased in 1957 for under $32,000. According to the story, there are 1,011 billionaires in the world today. If you examined the natal charts of these billionaires, there would be a few similarities but nothing that would stand out above the ordinary middle-class blue collar worker’s natal chart. Does this mean we all have the potential to become wealthy?

The planet Venus is traditionally identified in astrology with money and love. The planet is also used to describe our relationships and our values. To put it simply, Venus can be a guide to what makes us happy.

If we look at the natal chart of Bill Gates, the planets Saturn and Jupiter are closely tied to his Venus. It could be surmised that Bill Gates is happiest (Venus) when he is overcoming limitations (Saturn) on a grand (Jupiter) scale. He also gets satisfaction from learning (Saturn) how to increase (Jupiter) profits (Venus). If we leave the monetary aspect of Venus for a moment, we can see other effects of Venus on his chart.  Jupiter (great), Venus (love) and Saturn (commitment) in close proximity to each other points to his long term relationship with his wife Melinda of the past sixteen years.

A closer look at the placement of Venus will show us where we can maximize our own happiness. Keep in mind that Venus isn’t just about money but is also related to all types of relationships as well as what we find beautiful and what gives us pleasure.

The discovery of each new planet seemed to mark a major step in the evolution of humanity.   The planet Uranus was discovered in 1781 which coincided with the start of the Industrial Revolution.  There was much upheaval during this time with the American War of Independence (1775–1783) and the events leading up to the beginning of the French Revolution.  Uranus which rules the sign of Aquarius is associated with the keywords rebellion, upheaval, and independence. 

Pluto which is Scorpio’s planetary ruler was discovered during the rise of fascism which led to the Second World War.  Its discovery as a planet also coincides with the advent of organized crime and the Great Depression of the 1930s.  Astrological keywords used to describe Pluto are underground, elimination and seduction.

He set out to prove a correlation between the positions of the planets at the time of birth and certain human characteristics.  After going over thousands of birth charts, there appeared to be statistical positions of the planet Mars in the charts of athletes (called the Mars Effect), with similar placings of the planet Jupiter for actors, and with Saturn for scientists.  His calculations and assumptions were verified by a third party in 1960 by the Belgian Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of Paranormal Phenomenon.  This same committee later changed its mind and to save face, set out to disprove Gauquelin’s findings.  If you ever have a chance to do the research, the reasons for this reversal become fairly obvious.  It is similar to the stories that you read or even some of the things you have experienced first hand when an organization or individual approves something and then withdraws their support when they come to realize all the negative press they receive.

After reading numerous journals and accounts both for and against his findings and taking into account all the political wrangling that was occurring to try and disprove his studies, I came to the conclusion that he had indeed found something which proved that the day of birth is somehow correlated to certain psychological characteristics.   More specifically, he had proof that there was a correlation between sports champions and positions of the planet Mars in the sky at the time of their births.

I have been studying astrology for more than 25 years and still get satisfaction in discovering new ways of applying different planetary coordinates to certain events that occur in a person’s life.   

On a more subtle level, you can change your future by making very small changes in the way you approach things.  A number of motivational speakers talk about intention.  Why you do things has everything to do with the eventual outcome.  Am I in my current job because I enjoy my work or is it just a paycheque?   Making better choices makes for a better life.  Easier said than done though.  Many are stuck in jobs they wish they weren’t because of convenience, lack of education, or just complacency.  It takes considerable effort to make a change.  Astrology can help you see where your strengths are and whether or not you have hidden skills that are not being acted upon. 

Another way of changing your future is to alter the way you think about the present.  This could be deemed a lazier or passive approach but is just as valid which can yield instant results.  It is what has been called “making lemonade out of lemons”.  Seeing your situation differently and in a positive light is not only a coping mechanism but will cause the body to react differently.   A recent study on the immune system found that you can boost your immune system by thinking positive.  Whether your happier outlook is based on fact or an illusion doesn’t matter.  Just by imagining that your future is brighter, things are getting better and you will succeed releases endorphins and other important immune boosting chemicals.  Pretending that your situation is getting better in turn will attract more positives in your life which will have a snowball effect.  A good example of this is pretending to be what you want to be in life.  This can supercede the aspects in your birth chart pushing you beyond any limitations or restrictions.  This is a common technique for a high jumper as they imagine themselves clearing the bar before they actually attempt the jump. 

One of the most popular questions surrounding money is “will I win the big lottery?”  An astrologer is sometimes able to approximately determine a lottery win based on the position of certain planets, usually but not limited to Venus (money), Uranus (surprises) and Jupiter (expansion).   But the question of wealth includes holding onto money which is ruled by the planet Saturn (responsibility).   If a person wins a large sum of money but spends it all with nothing to show for it, this will likely be reflected in their chart from the relationship between the planet Neptune (dissolvement) and Venus (money).  When a birthtime is known, then the houses also come into play in a birth chart with the second house ruling money matters as well as the ruler of the second house and its placement in the chart.  As you can see, it can get very complex and it is not a simple task to determine if a person will become wealthy in their lifetime.  But those who can’t seem to save money can always get others who are knowledgable in this area to help them such as using the services of an investment broker.  This is just one example of how we can circumvent our birth charts by teaming up with others to change our fortune. 

My favourite story of the ups and downs of finances is when New York real estate magnate Donald Trump was going through a tough period.  The story goes that during the 1990 real estate crunch when Donald lost millions, he passed by a homeless person and realized that the man was wealthier than he was.  Donald, of course, later went on to bounce back and recover his billionaire status.  In his birth chart, Donald’s money planet Venus is well aspected to Uranus as well as Mars (determination).
